Cock-a-doodle-doooo!!
I am participating in Vintage Thingies Thursday at Coloradolady, so drop by if you want to see other bloggers' vintage thingies! Today I am sharing my rooster/chicken collection. Well, part of it. These are just the indoor chickens! This one, above, I think is the one that started it all. This guy hung on my grandparents' wall ever since I could remember, and when they passed away, it was very important that I get him.
Too much stuff on top of the cabinet. So what else is new?!
That Aunt Bee's Mayberry Cookbook cracks me up! It has some funny recipes in it, like...
Ernest T.'s Possum and Sweet Taters. Yummm!
OR, how about some pipin' hot Barbecued Raccoon? These are actual recipes! There are also alot of really good ones in there too.
These two, above, aren't old. The one on the left is from JoAnn Fabrics, and the one on the right is from Hobby Lobby.
And that's it. That's funny...I thought I had alot more! Either I've forgotten some, or I need to get some more!

What an amazing collection of chickens! I have a fondness for chickens too and at the moment I have the grand total of two! That cook book is hilarious. I'm not sure I could eat possum even if I was starving.
By the way, I hope your dream of visiting old blighty comes to true. If you need any info or recommendations I would be happy to help.
Your Grandparent's rooster is a real classic.
My 1943 Joy of Cooking has some really odd recipes, but nothing for possum.
My sister would truly love your post today. She is a great lover of chicken items and so many it is unreal. You have a really nice selection of interesting pieces.
Hi Carol,
Thanks for coming by and seeing my reds.
That is a lot of chickens you have there!
Love the measuring spoon one, and that it was your folks. How great that you got it.
blessings,
Barbara Jean
you have some funky things today, possum? uh no thanks LOL
We have the Aunt Bee cookbook! I love looking through really old cookbooks...the ones that don't even have an oven temperature!? Also, I have a few Hen on a Nests. I have the milk glass one and the clear glass one that you have.
I really enjoyed your chickens, the one that belonged to your grandparents is amazing. I had a great time looking at all of your other goodies next to the chickens! We really do have the same taste in many things...so fun! have a great week!!
I love the rooster measuring spoon holder from your grandma's kitchen wall - - - so glad you got it!
Great Collection. I have a few Rooster things and some fabric to make valances but haven't gotten around to it yet. right now the kitchen is red, so when I get tired of red I will do the Rooster thing. Thanks for sharing.
That cook book is a hoot! I am not into roosters but that measuring spoon holder is kinda cute. It looks like it has some advertising on it and maybe 2 hooks for pot holders or something? I spy a few things that would look sweet in my kitchen!! LOL
Boy, do I covet your Rooster spoon holder! LOL! I, too, have that same daffodil corner shelf, the jar with lambs and flowers, and the Refrigerator Jar. Great minds decorate alike!
What a treasure that you have of your grandparents..and such wonderful memories that it brings. Love that Aunt Bea cookbook..but I would pass on the possum. :)
Happy VTT..have a great day.
Love all of your rooster/chickens. My favorite is the black and white chicken book end. My dad has those types of real chickens and they are just so pretty. I also love the metal box/picnic basket that you have the glass rooster sitting on. How pretty.
Thanks for coming by and commenting on my chandelier. It was a very happy day for me when I found it.

I totally love that measuring spoon rooster. I've never seen one like it. Too bad it's a family heirloom, or else I'd try to sweet talk you out of it! lol.
The cookbook is cute. I know people who eat that stuff ...
Oh, that measuring spoon chicken is breathtaking!!
I have been trying to gather all the old goodness before other family members toss them in a dumpster at my Grandmother's.
They just don't get it!!
Chickens and roosters are my hot item right now. You have a wonderful collection and that is a cute one to start with; everything is displayed so nicely.

What fun chickens! When my daughter was little and I'd drag her to the antique malls, she always passed the time by counting the "nesting" chickens, it made the trip bearable for her!
I just found that Mayberry cookbook at a sale a couple of weeks ago, I couldn't resist!
You've got some beautiful pieces and the stories behind them make them all the more special. Thanks for sharing.
Wonderful collections of roosters and chickens! I love how each one is so different! Funny cookbook!
That cookbook is hysterical. I never thought that perhaps I should cook up the raccoons that keep opening my garbage cans. Love all your red items. I'm crazy about vintage red and roosters are one of my favorite things to paint! Some folks didn't( and still don't ) have anything to eat but possum and the like.
This summer I need to find some Rattlesnake recipes. We had 5 big ones in the yard last summer.
Great post. Great Chickens and Rooster collection.
I love the measuring spoon chicken! I remember my great grandma having a similar version in her kitchen window.
I love the ways you have them displayed and the one that started it all is outta this world!
Thanks for the fun post!
Great chickens! I love the cookbook. I will need to look for my own copy since I had a real Aunt Bee in my life as a child! ~Kelly
