Yo-Yo Quilt

The other day, while looking for something else, I found this yo-yo quilt that I had started....15 years ago! I remember it well. We were living in a condo at the time, and starting to look at houses to buy. Anyone who has ever shopped for houses knows how exciting and stressful that can be. So to relieve some of the stress, I started this quilt.

Here is a close-up of the colors that I used.

As you can see, I did have something of a pattern going for a while! But then I must have run out of that fabric, or decided to make it bigger. So other fabrics were added.

I also found these guys in the bag, all ready to be added on, and lots of circles waiting to be yo-yoed. That's probably not a word, is it? Well, I'm in a quandry now. The quilt measures 55 x 49 right now. I've decided that I want to make it bigger, to fit our bed. My questions are this: Do I try to buy more fabric that looks similar to what I've used? Do I continue to attach the yo-yos willy nilly, with no obvious pattern? And finally, am I supposed to add a piece of fabric to make a back for the quilt, or is it proper to leave it without a backing? I've seen them done both ways, and I suppose it's really up to my preference. My thinking was that a fabric backing would make it more sturdy. I'm counting on you quilters out there to lead me by the hand here, and help this poor quilt get finished!

  1. Our yo-yo quilts did NOT have backing. The yo-yos were bigger, though, I think. I love how old-fashioned they look. I'm a dunce in decorating, so I don't know what to say about whether you should add similar colors or contrasting ones...

  2. My mom is the quilt gal. She is working on a yo-yo for me now and just finished a grandmother's flower garden for Kate. I'll forward her your post and see if she has any insight.

  4. I am not a "quilter" but I don't think yo yo quilts need backs on them...I started some yo yo's once and put a few together but,as with other projects I didn't get far(smile)...yours is so pretty. Thanks for sharing it with us.....

  6. What a great little quilt! I love the Yo-Yo projects I find at antique malls! (I have a few in older posts on my blog!) Most of these are pillows and they cover a pillow that has a colored cover on it. But I don't know if you need a backing for the quilt. I think it's a choice really!

Carol, I'm revising an unused blog into a 1950's Recipe Blog: CHARMING VINTAGE RECIPES with Authentic 1950'S FAMILY FAVORITES. (I'm having so much fun putting it together!) Check it out!

  7. Hello ~
Hmmmmmm - I see the pattern...if you want to make it bigger, you could do a border of yo-yo's in a darker or lighter shade - I think if you added a back it would "thicken" it up for quilt - otherwise I think as is - is a decorative throw.........I haven't done yo-yo's but love those new little templates they make...I have many unfinished quilts....I need to finish - LOL !

  8. I made a very large YoYo quilt - and did not put a backing on it. It is very sturdy and I like it better without the backing. I made it so I could fold it across the bottom of our bed, it looks so neat there - it was a childhood dream of mine.

  9. I'm with Kammy. If you want to make it larger I would put a frame around all four sides. As for the backing it would depend on if you intend on using it or simply displaying on a guest bed or something. The backing would add some nice weight to it too.

All this from a person who wouldn't dream of making a quilt! So much work!
