The Story of Old Glory

I found this history of the flag at that estate sale last week, and of course I had to have it! I thought that showing this to you all would be the perfect way to explain why I chose "Old Glory Cottage" for the name of my blog. You see, I've had a fascination with the American flag, or Old Glory, since I was little. My dad was a WWII veteran, and on the 4th of July, he would put the flag up in the morning, and then take it down before it got dark. That is the protocol for displaying the flag. Or you are supposed to have a light shining on it, to illuminate it in the dark. Well I didn't know any of that when I was a kid! All I know is that was the one and only time I ever saw our flag every year, and I remember actually crying when it came time to take it down again!
That was the start of my love for our flag. This is a small part of my collection of Old Glory. One of these flags is a 48-star flag, which I was so excited to find at a garage sale! According to the timeline above, we were a 48 state nation from 1912 until 1958, when Alaska and Hawaii became states. "Therefore, on July 4, 1960, in accordance with the Flag Act of 1818, our present flag came into being, bearing 50 bright stars on a brilliant blue field." LONG MAY IT WAVE!!
Have a safe and happy 4th of July, and I hope you are flying Old Glory today!

Thanks for stopping by & commenting on my blog. I love your patriotic displays...too cool! I have a 48 star flag in one of my pics on yesterday's post. It's small & a bit grubby, but I love the look of it, and it was .50 at a yard sale. My kind of price!! Have a great 4th...I'll be back! *elaine*

Hi again...I posted a comment yesterday, but just spent a while scrolling through your old posts. You & I have so many collections in common! I'm an only child...maybe you're my twin sister from another mother?? The metal picnic baskets were the 1st to jump out at me...I have a small collection (6, I think) and am always on the hunt for a new one. Anyway, glad I found your blog...and I'll be back! *elaine*

I heart the vintage bling! It's hard to find around here. Also, adore your flags in the pot. how cute is that?

Here's some flag stuff for you - Alaska became a state officially on Jan 3, 1959 - and Hawaii not until August of the same year. Being an Alaskan (I was 13) we all thought we were cheated out of being the newest state for very long because they added Hawaii in the same year. The Alaska vote was in 1958, but officially it was 1959 before Congress declared it a state - what time we had - people running in the streets - guns going off - singing and dancing and of course the dissenters who didn't want statehood - so you had to watch out for who was shooting off the guns. Mostly it was fun fun fun - we got out of school that day. I have a photo of me and some classmates doing a dance in the middle of the street - not many cars in town at that time, so we weren't in any danger.

I once had a 49 star flag - but not sure what happened to it - if I could find it I would send it to you.
