Vintage Compacts for Vintage Thingies Thursday!

It's time for Vintage Thingies Thursday! Join me over at Coloradolady, where Suzanne hosts this great party every week!

Today I am sharing a small part of my vintage compact collection. The reason I'm not showing the whole collection is quite simple. I can't remember where I packed away the rest of them! This first compact is actually a small purse.

And when you open the one side, there is a mirror and a tube of lipstick.

The other side opens to reveal what I'm pretty sure is a cigarette holder. If anyone knows it's something else, please tell me!

Another purse, and a tube of lipstick would slide into those metal rings on the side.

Again, what I think is a ciggie holder on the one side...

and a compact on the other side. Sadly the mirror is broke, but it didn't stop me from buying it!

I love this one! It's got flecks of silver set inside the lucite. I won't bore you with the inside. The outside's prettier anyway!

This silver cloth one has a coin purse on one side...

and the other side opens with a compact inside. It was made by Lin-Bren, which made alot of compacts back in the day.

A red one, possibly bakelite? I know nothing about bakelite, I'm only guessing!

And finally we have this blue one. I wish compacts were still in fashion! I get a kick out of seeing my daughter pull one out of her purse when she checks her makeup! It's a cute pink one with the Eiffel Tower on it. I think she got it at Wet Seal or Forever 21, so compacts are still being made. Maybe I'll get myself a new one too, and continue to preserve these oldies! If you would like to see tons more vintage thingies, head on over to Suzanne's!

Yes compacts are still being made, but nothing to compare to yours. These are so pretty and have such neat features. Nice collection.

My mom had one like the silver cloth, but I've never seen the purse ones. They are really cool!
I'm having a giveaway for a Halloween bracelet. Be sure to look at it when you stop by for VTT.

You have some rare, long time not seen items from the past. I remember my Aunt Helene, and paternal grandmother having items like these. Many moons ago...lovely for you to have these.

These take me back too! I have a gorgeous one , got it in '69 I think as a bridesmaid gift. I need to use it again! I still need to powder my nose!
The cigarette case are very retro, I remember them.

Ohhh....a girl after my heart. I love compacts and have a few myself. You can still get them. I think Estee Lauder releases a few each year.

P.S. If you want to know if the red one is bakelite, put hot water on a cloth and rub the surface in an inconspicuous place. If it's bakelite, there will b a slight smell of menthol (if I recall).

What a great collection. I can see how some can get misplaced though, being so small.

Is there more in the attic??? Oh girl, you don't know the half of it. There's the attic, which you can see inside if you look for "attic" in my lables on the left sidebar. There's also a garage, a "washhouse", Grandpa's work shop, Great Grandpa's work shop and several lean-tos. All piled to the rafters. It's not all treasures mind you, a lot of it is trash. And the tresures have mostly been well used so they have more sentimental value than anything. About the only thing that left this property since the 1930s were the eggs and gladiolas they sold! We are so in over our heads trying to get it all cleaned up so be careful what you offer!LOL!

Hugs,
Dawn

Hi Carol
You have some interesting collections. I love compacts too but I dare not start to collect because I know I'll not be able to stop! I love the bakelite one. The old light switches in my cottage are made of bakelite!

Carol, I've never seen compacts with a purse handle before- how very unusual to me. Yours collection is so very pretty. Not only did a woman have to keep herself looking pretty, but, she had to have a place to stash her ciggies. Geez, everyone smoked back in the day- think of all the old b/w movies, and even the current tv series, "Mad Men." Even the most mundane of items were designed so classy! Hope you can hunt up the rest of your collection someday.... *grin*
hugs, Sue

Ah yes, the convenience of having a place to stash your smokes! LOL! This is a very cool collection. It would compliment my vintage purses, gloves, and hats very well.
Thanks for sharing!

These are really beautiful compacts. I have never seen these before. My mom used to have a mother of pearl compact. What a fun collection. I will have to keep my eyes open and see if I am lucky enough to stumble on to one. Thanks for sharing them. I enjoyed your post.

You have some really great vintage compacts in your collection!! I have been searching for one of the purse ones for a while now...I want just the right one. :) I saw that someone posted the smell test for bakelite, but you can also put some 409 on a cloth and rub in a place that isn't noticeable, if the cloth turns like a nicotine yellow, then it's bakelite. I've tried both of these tests and haven't had too much luck...maybe my stuff just isn't bakelite! but if one of the tests do work, I'd love to hear your results. :)
