Thrifty Treasures
Please join me over at Southern Hospitality, where you can see the treasures that everyone found this weekend, and Rhoda is our kind hostess!
The garage sales were a bit of a dud this weekend. Nothing earth shattering, but I'm grateful for what I found. Actually my cup runneth over, and I've had to start rearranging things. We live in a tiny house, which can be a good thing, as it forces me to have only the things that I truly love out on display. I love these frames, because they look like all of the vintage, etched mirrors that I have been collecting. They were never used, and $1 each. Originally they were $12.99 each at JoAnn Fabrics.
I was glad to find another apothecary jar to add to my collection. At the time, I didn't know where it was going, or what to put in it, so I just stuck it up on a cabinet.
Then inspiration struck, and I stuck some moss and a vintage bird, one of a pair, in it and put it on the dining room table. It will do for now.
I found this clock a couple of weeks ago, for $1. It's very heavy, solid wood. But it didn't work, hence the $1 price tag. Well I've seen enough transformations on other blogs, that I knew right away I could redo it.
I stripped all of the clockworks out of it, painted it Heirloom White, added fabric to the back, and a pink glass knob.
And added the other vintage bird from the pair. Does anyone have any ideas on how to get rid of the gold stencilling on the door? I'm not crazy about it, and would like to remove it if I can safely do it.
I also got this old cement goose and her three goslings for $10.
These are all vintage cups, Glasbake and Federal, 50 cents each. I love the red plaid ones so much, and I had to get the Chicago one. Our daughter is going to college there, and it has a picture of the Sears Tower, soon to be called something else, but it will always and forever be the Sears Tower to me!
Just don't tell Kevin, Wayne, and Donald that I have their cups.
And they go with the other Kevin cup I had.
But no one will know, except you, that the cups have names on the other side!
I also found this old states tablecloth for 50 cents. Illinois has a cow,
and Rhode Island has a chicken! When I got home, I realized it only has 24 of the states on it! Ah well, after a good long soak, it will be perfect for the 4th of July next year!
I found this Mary Emmerling Country book for $1. I've got several of her books, and you would think that it would be so dated, being published in 1991, but it's not, and could just as easily be called Cottage, instead of Country. I'll be trying the Cucumber Sandwiches recipe this afternoon!
Finally, this wasn't a garage sale purchase, but I'm so excited to dive into it! I love all of the BH&G magazines, don't you? Like Country Gardens, and Garden Ideas and Outdoor Living. I was hoping to find the Flea Market one, but they didn't have it at JoAnn's. I'm hoping to get inspired. I want to paint a couple of pieces of furniture, but I'm experiencing a lot of resistance from others in the family! So, what did YOU find this weekend?

HI, Carol, since I've moved my blog to Wordpress (no longer Blogger), the Followers widget is no longer available to me, so I hope you'll subscribe! Thanks.
I love the tablecloth and the mugs. My family was pretty resistant to painted furniture too. I started with our wicker rocker and sofa that was brown. During the entire process they kept saying "That's not going to work" now everyday someone comments how great they look.
Those frames do look totally vintage. I LOVE them..all the find you got were fantastic. I love what you did with the clock..got me thinkin now,,LOL. I couldn't put my video up yesterday with all my finds. I scored big time ,,,I could have taken pictures but ended up putting all my items away after I realized I couldn't put the video up..SIGH...
I absolutely love your idea with the personalized mugs--you are one clever lady! That clock transformation is just simply inspirational. Come over and visit me sometime...
OK, great stuff! Love the idea of putting the bird in the jar! And the clock, too. My mom used to have one of those, I wish I would have kept it. The mugs are cute, too.
You got some great finds and transformed them so well!
My hubby wasn't too excited when I said that I wanted to start painting furniture either. I just showed him pictures of what people were doing and then tried a low cost piece on my own. I would say that he is converted now:)
LOVE the book!!! :) I love to find stuff like that at prices like that. ;) Visiting from Rhoda's party. :)
Girrrrrrrrl, my jaw literally dropped when I saw what you did to that clock!!!!!
Very creative with your great finds!!
I LOVE what you did to that clock! What vision! And the geese are adorable! If they don't like your garden, they can fly to mine! Linda
That altered clock is wonderful! What an idea! And I would love to find an apothecary jar like that, a girl can never have to many of those.
My goodness...you did great!
I love what you did with the clock. How very creative.
Too funny about the previously owned coffee cups!!
Rhonda
I love your clock case make-over! Very cottage-y and clever. Did you try scrapping, carefully, the gold stuff with a razor blade? If that fails, there is a product called Goo gone that just might work. Try to find the pro strength, rather than the home use tiny bottle they sell at the grocery store. There really is a difference. Just make sure you work with massive amounts of fresh air...the smell will knock the tusks off an elephant!! *elaine*
You did good! I really like your clock redo.
Glenda
Isn't inspiration wonderful? I love the clock makeover, very nice!
Your new table centerpiece also has given me an idea of what to do with a glass hurricane I have. Thanks!
I am on a tablecloth dry spell lately. Love yours! I have a set of red gingham cups like yours, mine say MOM and DAD on them. I wonder where they all came from????
I bought a glass cracker barrel the other day with gold lines on it. I used a Mr. Clean eraser on it and it came right off. Good luck! (Awesome cock idea!)
Hi Carol,
LOVE the clock makeover!!!!!!!!!!!!
I HAVEN'T SEEN THAT DONE BEFORE, so I learned something new to do...if I remember and find a clock.
I remember those red checked mugs when I was a "kid"...
Deb :)
Your secret is safe with me!!
What wonderful finds. I love the tablecloth, what a bargain...and your cups are too cute..but I love what you did with the clock!! If you can not get rid of the gold, maybe you could take a vintage looking piece of scrapbook paper, cute thin strips and mod podge over the gold strips, that might be a way to get rid of the gold.
Hi You had some great finds this week. I love the clock redo!!

great finds as always! love the jar!
Carol,
Thanks so much for that sweet comment over at my blog. And *I* knew as soon as I saw *your* blog that I was going to love it! And I do! Thaks for following over at Armchair housewife and consider yourself followed right back. ;)
Now, onto your finds. First of all, you did an amazing job repurposing that clock. Wow, job well done! I'm inspired!
second, you getting those mugs for 50 cents was a steal. Do you know in the antique stores around here they want up to 10 dollars a pop for one of those babies? i'd love to have some because they remind me so much of my childhood, but I'll have to wait to find them at a garage sale like you did. :)
Thanks again for stopping by, and I look forward to more great stuff here at Old Glory Cottage.
Blessings!
Nicole

Wow, you did a fabulous job on your clock! I love it, it's so feminine and pretty. The bird is an especially sweet touch. I wonder if you used a razor blade to get the gold off the glass? Good luck, either way I think it's beautiful!
Hi Carol
very cute mugs.
and i love the bird in the apothecary jar. I got a little bird at Pier 1 last week, I'm thinking he would look cute in my apothecary jars I got this weekend
Love all your finds
I love what you did with the clock! What a neat idea. I also love the table cloth. Something about those old table linens!
Hi Carol :) What fabric did you use inside that clock? It's so pretty, love the floral print. And my Dad's name is Wayne, he says he wants his cup back ;)
i had some stenciling I didn't like on a picture frame I bought at a garage sale. It came off with a Magic Eraser (by Mr. Clean brand) Try it- it may be just the ticket!
It looks like you are getting ready for the Cloche Party too! I love that jar. Last time jars just like yours were also "at the party".
Thanks for leaving me a comment
: O )
Have a great week.
Charla
I love the apothecary jar - I just bought my first one last weekend and can't wait to find a place to use it. I need to get my husband to build me more shelves.
